So the most important question is - of the ones I haven't read, and haven't marked to read, what are the top ones I should read?

Literary Musings
I am curious about what makes the sense of looking back so powerful and moving in literature. Paradise Lost is just one example: the image of Adam and Eve looking back on the Garden and knowing they can't go back is very powerful. In Lord of the Rings, you can see it even in the prologue: we know going into the story that by the time the story is supposedly recounted the hobbits have "dwindled" and the days of their "peace and prosperity" are behind them. We are now in a different world, looking back.

What I wonder is why this looking back is so compelling. Where does the need to look back over our shoulder come from? Why would it seem we want to absorb a world where we believe the past is more beautiful than the future?

A Recipe!
Recipe for an unprepared-for-class elanor1013:

8 hours of nonclass schoolwork Sunday
3 hours of orchestra rehearsal
1 Monday figure skating class
1 assignment to bring music for first skating program (ever!)
1 trial version of Adobe Audition
3 hobbit CD tracks
1 John Williams compilation CD
1 Little Women soundtrack
3 Harry Potter tracks

Mix briskly until 5 am without completing CD, stirring checking email periodically. Attend law school class at 11:30am.

This recipe is fail-proof!
